Tsholofelo Counseling and Support Centre

preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS through positive behavior change

Tsholofelo Counseling and Support Centre is one of 11 centers operating under Botswana Christian Aids Intervention Programme, one of the oldest HIV/AIDS organizations in Botswana. Tsholofelo, like its mother organization, works through the institutional power of the church to affect positive behavior change, to educate the community, and to support people living with HIV/AIDS. While Tsholofelo receives basic funding from BOCAIP, the Centre is always in need of more resources to expand existing programs and to put new ideas into action. Future plans include the development of programs for orphans and vulnerable children.

MISSION: Tsholofelo Counseling and Support Centre aims to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS through positive behavior change interventions and to mitigate the psychosocial impact of HIV/AIDS on infected and affected individuals and communities. The vast majority of people in Botswana have a Christian influence in their lives and look to the church for moral and spiritual guidance. Thus the church holds great potential as a means of communicating HIV/AIDS prevention messages to a broad cross-section of the country. The church is appropriately placed to help people talk about and deal with issues of sexual health and relationships. Since opening its doors in 2000, Tsholofelo has pursued a Christian values based approach to HIV/AIDS intervention.
FOCUS AREAS: HIV/AIDS, Women, Youth
PROGRAMS: Tsholofelo offers the following services to clients free of charge:
1. On site counseling – This is a daily service offered by trained counselors on a one-to-one basis at selected sites, such as clinics, hospitals, or at Tsholofelo Counseling and Support Centre. It targets people living with AIDS, affected family members, and couples. Our counseling aims to offer psychosocial support to people living with HIV/AIDS, to empower individuals at risk of HIV infection to make less risky choices for their lives, and to promote positive behavior change in individuals and communities.
2. Voluntary testing and counseling – Counselors offer pre-test counseling to individuals who voluntarily seek HIV testing. We have identified a need for testing facilities at the Centre itself. The service has not started as yet but it is hoped to start soon. This service will hopefully be offered using the rapid test kits at the center.
3. Home visits – This is a service which follows an initial counselor-client contact. It is targeted at family members and caregivers of orphans and involves supportive counseling within the home environment. Home visits are intended to empower families to provide care amidst the challenges that come with AIDS, to equip families for prevention of HIV transmission, and to promote individual and communal responsibility in HIV prevention within the family.
4. Support groups - A support group for people living with HIV/AIDS holds regular meetings at the Center. The aim of the support group is to provide a fee environment for fellowship, experience sharing and psychosocial support for PLWHA within the communities, to promote positive living through sharing of practical experiences among PLWHA and their families, and to equip support group members with income generating skills including bead making and gardening.
5.Youth Group - The youth group brings together out of school youth for the purpose of personal growth, acquisition of life skills, peer to peer outreach, and the development income generating projects.
6. Matete Satellite - As a sub-center of Tsholofelo, Matete Satellite offers counseling to pregnant women and their partners and encourages enrollment into the national Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission program. Matete Satellite also organizes a support group for these women.
